A network nobody could log into.
The office is a loft in Tribeca with high ceilings and exposed beams. Its UniFi network ran on a cloud-hosted controller that cost $30 a month, and nobody at the office had admin access.
On the first visit in September 2023 we got access back and documented what was there. On the second we moved the controller on site, added four Wi-Fi 6 access points and kept three older ones as fill-ins. We ran a Wi-Fi survey before and after.
By 2026 the core was the bottleneck.
In January 2026 staff reported random slowdowns, one day from about 9 to 3. The controller sat at 80 to 90 percent CPU, and the core gear was legacy and no longer getting updates.
The access points were also still where the original installer had put them.
Three phases, so the failing part got fixed first.
We proposed a full refresh. It was more than they wanted to spend at once, so we split it up.
- Phase 1: test the cabling and fix bad runs
- Phase 2: replace the gateway, switch and controller
- Phase 3: Wi-Fi 7 access points with 6 GHz
They approved the first two.
One Friday for the core swap.
They picked a Friday because fewer people come in. The parts arrived two days before.
We tested the runs first and re-terminated the ones that failed. Then the old core came out, and a new UniFi gateway and PoE+ switch went into the rack.
The access points are the next phase.
Phase 3, the Wi-Fi 7 access points, is still open.
Splitting the work let them fix the part that was failing first, and leave the Wi-Fi refresh for when they’re ready.
